SUMMARY

The Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM), is looking for a Community Engagement AmeriCorps VISTA member who is passionate about community engagement and outreach, education,  youth development, and who is awakened to the crucial importance of academic achievement for every child, preschool to post-secondary, cradle to career. The VISTA will receive a living allowance, relocation allowance, end of service AmeriCorps Eli Segal Education Award OR an end-of-service cash stipend health allowance, and many other benefits. Join a movement of education, youth, business, government, foundation, community, and faith leaders across Spartanburg County, working together in pursuit of economic mobility for all.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Community Engagement VISTA will work in Spartanburg, SC to support community partners working to close equity gaps throughout SAM’s cradle to career academic outcomes. This will entail working with community leaders to build the competencies of youth-serving providers and volunteers providing direct support to children and youth. The VISTA will engage Out of School Time (OST) partners through social media, expand professional development opportunities, and recruit and train volunteers to support SAM’s post-secondary strategies.

  • Research institutions who offer academic support and those who incorporate educational experiences into outreach activities, including faith-based partners.

  • Work with partners to capture youth voice to help inform SAM initiatives & decision making by individuals being impacted.

  • Create surveys to track participant satisfaction and knowledge gained.

  • Summarize progress from pre/post surveys and interviews.  Analyze, assemble, and share data findings with an impactful presentation.

  • Research local & national training opportunities for youth serving providers.

  • Communicate training opportunities to support capacity building for partners.

  • Coordinate communication with youth advisory councils and boards so they are informed of initiatives and can provide feedback for OST Collaborative planning.

  • Collaborate with United Way of Piedmont’s Youth Philanthropy Board as a part of the youth engagement strategy.

  • Develop a plan for expanding youth voice at SAM to post-secondary efforts.

  • Review local data and youth listening sessions.

  • Develop a virtual training guide organized by training type, cost, and training modality.

  • Attend OST collaborative meetings to stay up to date with training needs.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree
